The Promethean Ventures monogram: a P and a V joined by a rising flame

Promethean Ventures

A self-sustaining family unit, building a living out of what it can make — with the newest tools there are pointed at the oldest ambition.

Family-run in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

The name

Fire, carried into human hands

Prometheus took fire from the gods and gave it to people, and everything people have made since comes from that one theft. Technology is not something that happens to a household. It is a tool you pick up.

That is the whole idea behind this business: the work stays human — the judgement, the craft, the deciding — and the newest tools available get pointed at it, so that a small family operation can stand on its own without being bought, absorbed or told what it is allowed to make.

What we do

We make things

Not a farm in the usual sense. Nothing is grown here and nothing is raised — the land is where we live and work, not what we sell. The living comes from what the household can make.

Self-sustaining

One household, funding itself. Each thing we finish is what pays for starting the next one, which is the whole of the business plan.

Made here, end to end

Designed, built and finished in-house. Nothing outsourced, nothing licensed in, nothing we could not take apart and explain.

What is next

Elysian Realms: Beyond the Seal — a turn-based strategy game in the handheld tradition, picking the story up where the first one ends. A month in and already the better game.

What we have made

Elysian Realms

The first thing this business has put its name to, and the proof of the idea: no publisher, no outsourced art, no licensed assets.

A pixel-art tower defense for PC, and the first proof that the model works: a thing made from nothing but time, judgement and the tools to hand, which now earns.

Seven realms, each one changing a rule of the game rather than its scenery; every run, won or lost, feeds a skill tree that carries over to the next.

Forty-nine pieces of music, written and recorded for it. Every sprite drawn for it. It was built at home, by a father and his daughter, as a lesson in how a game is put together that did not stop there.

There is a book as well, written alongside it: a chronicle of the seven realms, a field manual to every tower, enemy and rule, and an almanac of the numbers underneath all of it, illustrated with the game's own art. It is not published yet.

How we work

Three things we hold to

  1. The work stays human

Tools are tools. The judgement, the taste and the decisions are ours, and we do not ship anything we could not explain line by line.

  2. Independence is the point

Every venture here exists to make the next one possible without borrowing, selling a stake, or taking an order from anybody.

  3. Forethought, not afterthought

Prometheus means forethought. His brother Epimetheus — afterthought — took the gods' gift without asking what was inside it, and everyone since has lived with the answer. We would rather be the first brother: think it through, build the thing itself rather than the promise of it, and hand it over to be checked. Anything we claim here can be looked at, used, or taken apart by whoever cares to — nobody has to take our word for any of it, and nobody should.
